In the United States, the law provides a number of ways for immigrants to earn lawful permanent residency through employment. This is what is often referred to as getting a Green Card. There are several employment-based (EB) “preference immigrant” categories that applicants may be eligible for. The three primary categories EB1, EB2, and EB3 are intended for individuals with exceptional abilities or skills certain fields of work, and those with advanced education who may or may not already be working in their field. There are two additional categories reserved for special situations such as religious workers, investors government employers and their families, and certain practicing physicians. The process of becoming a lawful permanent resident is know as “adjustment of status.” To be eligible to adjust status in most cases, you must be present in the United States after being “inspected and admitted” or “inspected and paroled” by an immigration officer.
