German Re-Naturalization Outside Germany

Former German citizens who currently live outside Germany may be eligible to regain German citizenship.

Eligibility depends on on criteria such as:

  • How, why and when citizenship was lost
  • Current residence abroad
  • Ongoing ties to Germany

The process is made of three steps: Establish German citizenship as of 1870/1913, proof that a ‘Beibehaltungsgenehmigung’ would have been issued, meet the other requirements for a naturalization (e.g. language, income). The process requires detailed documentation.

The information provided is general in nature and does not replace a formal consultation.
