German Passport (First-Time Application)

Applying for a German passport for the first time requires individuals to provide proof of German citizenship confirming that they are officially German citizen.

First time applications typically apply to individuals who:

  • Were born outside Germany
  • Gained German citizenship through lineal descent (e.g. through a parent/grandparent)
  • Became German through residency or, otherwise
  • Have held a German passport which expired more than 15 years ago

Depending on the individual’s situation, additional documents such as birth certificates, family records, or official proof of citizenship or, a name declaration may be required before the application can proceed.

Requirements can vary based on current residence, place of birth, age (minor) and how German citizenship was obtained.
